MYSTERY YEAST MUTATION
In this inquiry-based exploration students are asked to discover the nature of the mutation in a yeast strain by designing and carrying out their own experiments. Students are provided with a conundrum: the same mutant yeast strain can grow on one type of media plate but not another.
Students need to understand the concept of diffusion, the general structure of DNA, and the mechanics of DNA replication, cell division and mutation.
Class Time: Portions of class periods over approximately two weeks.
Prep Time: Two hours to order materials, prepare nucleic acid disks, streak yeast plates, and set up
student materials; an additional two hours if pouring your own plates of media.
